Sonnet No. 9

Clouded obscurity meets beyond the horizon,
Pale pink lines merge with a black streak,
A bird's faint chirp breaks into the night's long dying:
and tired bodies
squeak at the joints
as feet slip themselves
wearily down to the floor
to tramp
into the streets
tramping into
the endless streets
of labor bough cheap
at the price of
a person's private
chain of events
each link locked firmly
to the other
by a loud clink:
the sound stretches
itself out
over the yawning mouth
of a single lifetime
which began
with a shrill shriek
and ends in the great
gap of falling
back into sleep:
Gentle uncertainty greets beyond the horizon,
Pale grey shapes which move towards light,
A life's long sigh hopes in the dying,
To find form.
