Imperishable Essence

Images, smells, emotions,
Closer to memory:
Than language, faces, pain.
Odor of nature after the rain.
Freshly baked bread of mornings.
Hiss of steam engines,
In drab, cold stations,
Seasonal songs of birds.

Bold wind in trees, chimneys,
Warm blasts from coal fires
Coming in from the cold.
Camphor, peppermint,
In chapels and churches,
Feathers on hats: men's white shirts,
Haystacks, cowsheds, stables:
Horses and cows with names.

Many of these images, long vanished,
all things pass on: worlds perish,
nations also: leaving cherished
relics, of bones and stones,
only Spirit remains unmoved
Albeit with changed image.
This the amazing mystery,
of the Unknown Energy!
